Restoration & conservation

Lafarge has a reputation for quarry restoration spanning four decades. While quarrying and nature conservation may appear to be worlds apart, there's a side to our business dedicated to giving something back to nature.

When the life of a quarry ends, the land will either be returned to its original use or converted to some other. Restoration forms part of the plans for any quarry, and a comprehensive and detailed restoration scheme is implemented at the planning stages of every quarry development. Long before excavation begins we know how the restored land will look. Sophisticated techniques are employed to ensure that newly-created habitats match the surrounding area and we encourage colonisation by indigenous species of plants and animals. Ongoing management, often in partnership with conservation organisations, ensures the new habitats continue to thrive.

Lafarge recycles millions of glass bottles, crushing them for use as sand in asphalt, concrete and even as a surface for equestrian menages
